Five-session mentoring course
Peer conflict and bullying
Who it's for
Consider this course for a pupil showing:
- Repeated falling-outs with the same peer or group
- Involved, on either side, in unkind behaviour towards or from peers
- Social exclusion or a recent, sudden shift in friendship groups
- Distress or anger that is clearly linked to peer incidents rather than adults or schoolwork
What it works towards
- Understand different perspectives within a conflict
- Build empathy and perspective-taking skills
- Recognise the different roles in bullying situations, including bystander
- Practise practical conflict-resolution and repair skills
The five sessions
- Session 1 What is going on between us Pupil can describe a conflict from their own perspective, real or made up, without starting from blame.
- Session 2 Seeing it their way Pupil can articulate at least one plausible perspective of the other person involved.
- Session 3 Bullying: bystander, target, or both Pupil can identify which role or roles were played in a bullying dynamic and what each role needs.
- Session 4 Sorting it out Pupil can build an 'I statement' about a real fall-out and rehearse it until they would say it.
- Session 5 My social goals plan Pupil has an agreed, practical next step for peer relationships.
A sixth session follows, without the pupil: the mentor writes the support plan and agrees next steps.
The approach, and where it comes from
Sessions are built around restorative practice, using the same 'affective questions' approach used in restorative conferencing in UK schools, combined with structured perspective-taking and friendship-skills activities. The module follows the DfE's Preventing and tackling bullying advice for schools, and supports the respectful-relationships expectations assessed under Ofsted's attendance and behaviour, and personal development and well-being, evaluation areas.
