Sessions use self-monitoring and metacognitive strategies, helping pupils notice and manage their own attention, which the EEF highlights as effective when paired with clear, achievable goals rather than generic instructions to 'concentrate'. The module also responds to the findings of Ofsted's 2014 report Below the radar on how much learning time low-level disengagement can cost across a school year, and to the DfE's Behaviour in Schools expectation that disengagement is addressed early rather than left unchallenged.
Objective: Pupil can describe, using a recent example, what disengagement looks and feels like.
Check-in: 1. Rapport chat first — something outside lessons. 2. Ask: 'which lesson did the week go best in, and which worst?' 3. Do not frame this as being in trouble for switching off. 4. Say what happens to what they tell you: you keep notes, and the plan at the end goes to staff they agree to. If something worries you about their safety you have to pass it on, and you would tell them who to.
Input: 1. Explain that focus naturally comes and goes for everyone, including adults. 2. Ask: 'can anyone concentrate for a whole lesson?' The aim is not constant focus — that is not available to anyone. 3. The skill is noticing sooner that you have switched off, so less of the lesson is lost. 4. Say you will map a real lesson out in a moment, the switched-off bits included.
Activity: 1. Get out the focus timeline template. 2. Ask: 'think of a lesson this week — when were you actually working, and when did you lose focus?' 3. Pupil marks those points on the focus timeline. 4. Ask: 'how long did you last before you first lost focus?' 5. Be clear that everyone loses focus — you are finding the pattern, not the failure.
Reflect: 1. Ask: 'what was happening right before you lost focus?' 2. Pupil watches for that one thing this week and tells you next session.
Watch for: Disengagement is easy to miss in quiet pupils, this module is often as valuable for these pupils as louder disruption modules are for others.
Parent/carer take-home: Ask about one moment this week focus wandered during homework, without frustration, just curious.
